A canvas picture is a picture on canvas that can be mounted on a stretcher.
Canvas is made of a flexible, lightweight linen fabric. Usually the canvas is stretched on a wooden stretcher frame. It is the perfect base for oil paintings and acrylic paintings. Due to the fabric structure of canvases, canvas paintings appear very artistic and noble.
Art prints can be printed directly onto canvas using digital printing. Offset prints can be glued on canvas. After the motif is on the canvas, it is stretched on a stretcher frame and can also be finished. Famous paintings and your own photos can look particularly noble as art prints on canvas.
Canvas pictures can be hung as a mural without further framing, but additional framing is also possible.

How is canvas made?

Historically:

Canvas is made from the natural fibres flax or linen, which are obtained from the plant "common flax". The fibres can be easily spun and are processed into a fabric. This fabric is called canvas or linen cloth and is boil-proof, tear-resistant, light, flexible and does not form lint. The canvas is usually primed with a mixture of glue and white paint. The primer ensures that the canvas remains durable for a long time and the bright background increases the luminosity of the colours that are subsequently applied.
For digital printing:
A polycotton production canvas is particularly suitable for art prints. It consists of a cotton-polyester blend fabric, is coated on one side and has a matt surface. The polyester content makes the canvas easy to stretch and very tear-resistant. The coating ensures that the fabric is waterproof. The fabric structure of the polycotton production canvas remains clearly visible even after printing.

What is a stretcher frame?

A stretcher is a frame made of wood, but instead of framing a picture from the outside, it holds it stretched from the back. The canvas is stretched over the stretcher and stapled to the back with staples. Stretcher frames consist of four individual strips that are put together to form the frame. The joints between the strips are not fixed, canvas and stretcher hold each other in shape. If the canvas loses its tension, wedges can be driven into the corners of the stretcher frame from the back, thus increasing the tension again.
Stretcher frames come in many different sizes, but the width and height can also vary. For example, if you want a painting to stand out strongly against the wall, a tall stretcher frame should be used. In the kunst-für-alle online-shop, you can choose between the gallery stretcher frame, which is 18mm high, and the museum stretcher frame, which is 42mm high. Both stretcher frames are made of high-quality pine wood. The wood is artificially kiln-dried, which means that it only has a very low residual moisture content. The individual wooden strips have wedge-shaped prongs at the ends, which are inserted into each other. The special construction and the high-quality wood prevent the stretcher frames from warping (becoming crooked) when stretched.
The edge, which is created laterally by the height of the stretcher frame, can also be designed differently by using different printing methods. It can, for example, not be printed and remain white or extend over the entire surface including the border. Another possibility is a mirrored border. The border is printed mirrored from the edge. The advantage is that nothing of the motif is lost on the edge and it still looks as if the image continues on the sides.

Digital art prints as canvas pictures

The digital art prints in the kunst-für-alle online-shop are printed individually after order in the digital printing process with a large format inkjet printer (Canon iPf 9400) on polycotton production canvas. The modern printer works with 12 different colours and can reproduce the finest colour gradations. Of course, the pigmented inks are UV-resistant.
The art print on canvas is cut out after printing and mounted on a stretcher frame, depending on the order. You can choose between the gallery stretcher frame and the museum stretcher frame.
The mounting of the canvas and the finishing are done by hand. Particular attention is paid to the precise folding of the canvas corners over the stretcher. The corners are folded so that there is a straight finish and no wood is visible.

Classical art prints as canvas pictures

Classical art prints (offset prints, screen prints) cannot be printed directly on canvas. However, a special technique makes it possible to glue these prints onto canvas. The prints glued on canvas are usually refined with a canvas foil, which gives the picture a canvas look, and mounted on a high-quality stretcher frame to form the canvas picture. The special technique can also turn classic art prints into a deceptively real canvas picture.

What finishes are available?

Finishings are designed to make an art print even more beautiful and of higher quality. A canvas can get an acrylic or artist's thick layer finishing.
Acrylic finishing:
An acrylic finish gives the canvas a special shine, makes the colours look a little more intense and serves as a protective layer against UV light and mechanical stress. However, acrylic finishing does not make sense for classic art prints on canvas, as these effects are already achieved by a fixing film.
Artist's Thick Film Finishing:
The artist's thick-film finishing is applied by hand with individual brush strokes. The artist's brush strokes are imitated with a paste that is transparent after drying. This process creates the impression that the art print is a hand-painted image. The paste not only creates a structure on the surface of the picture, but also lends it shine and luminosity.
The finishes make the art prints particularly noble and long-lasting.

Hand-painted canvas pictures

Hand-painted art reproductions as canvas pictures are created by artists who paint a canvas that has previously been stretched on a stretcher frame. Mostly these canvases are mounted by machine on wooden frames and differ in the finishing of the corners. The machine-made stretcher frames are usually glued and have no wedges to re-stretch the picture in the corners.
The hand-painted pictures are unique, as they are painted individually and completely by hand. Another special feature of hand-painted canvas pictures is that other materials such as metal elements can also be used. Hand-painted canvas pictures are unique works of art.

Framing for canvas pictures

While framing for a canvas painting is not mandatory to hang it as a wall picture, it can look very exclusive.
A thick frame can be chosen that is the height of the stretcher frame and encloses the picture from the outside. The fact that it is a stretcher frame picture is then no longer recognisable, but the smoothly stretched canvas surface is still convincing.
Another option is to choose a shadow gap frame. The shadow gap frame is ideal for canvas pictures because a small gap is left free between the picture and the frame. Through the gap that remains free, the stretcher frame can still be seen. A shadow is created between the picture and the frame, which creates a very special three-dimensional effect.
