Artists portrait of Egon Schiele

Egon Schiele

  • Born: 12. June 1890 in Tulln
  • Died: 31. October 1918
Along with Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele is the painter with the strongest influence on the Viennese art scene after the famous Klimt-era. Born on June 12th, 1890 in Tullnat on the River Danube, Egon Schiele began to question the aura of the Viennese Art Nouveau after he had overcome a phase of artistic self-discovery. Many critics saw his expressive nude paintings as obscene and ugly. The careless way of choosing his young nude models led to the Neulengbach-affair in 1912 that resulted in a short period of imprisonment which marked him as a criminal and brought him into disrepute for a long time. None of his critics, however, could deny him respect for his remarkable talent. In his figures, which always seemed fragile and sensitive while displaying a hint of ugliness, one could clearly imagine the inner turmoil and fear in the subject just before the outbreak of World War 1. The fall of Austria and the Habsburg Monarchy between 1914-1918 accompanied the slow recognition of his work. Only a few days after the sudden death of his wife Edith, Egon Schiele himself died on October 31st, 1918 at the age of 28. He was a victim of the Spanish flu that was raging in Vienna at the time.
