Michelangelo Buonarroti, born on March 6th, 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany, is one of the foremost figures in the history of art and culture. Along with Leonardo da Vinci, he was one of the most influential Renaissance artists on the threshold of the Modern Age. A master of the higher Renaissance and a leading proponent of Mannerism he played a major part in the development of perspective and space. His theories on fine arts contributed to overcoming the form and art forms of the Middle Ages. His most famous works include the gigantic marble of David in Florence and the frescoes on the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel in Rome ("The Creation of Adam "). As a painter, sculptor and architect, Michelangelo embodied a new type of artist acting as an independent "businessman", who was able to break free of the fetters of patronage imposed by the princes and other members of the aristocracy and devote himself fully to his art.
