We waited for hours, well away from the gathering herd on the far bank. One at a time wildebeest scouted the river, raked the dust and sniffed the water as if to smell it for danger. We waited and waited, scout after scout, time after time. Suddenly, a male decided to go, then another, then three together, four, eight at a time, then cows, calves all leaping and swimming for their lives. Snorting, mooing, splashing, the noise was incredible. The dust became a cloud that swept through the trees. A crocodile toyed with the odd calf but, being so bloated, did not bother to pounce. A few minutes later it was over, the herds had crossed and clambered out of the river onto the bank from where we had been watching. They swarmed across the savanna again. What a sight, what a sound, raw Africa !
