Published in 1X-yearbook 2015 MEMENTO (2015-08-03) THE IDEA I had the idea to create an image that displays a very significantly reduced visual information of a running track in a stadium. Running has accompanied my life since the late 60s of the last century. At my first picture that was published by 1x.com in October 2013 a running track was displayed from the perspective of a 100 m runner. With this image here I want to show another perspective. THE PHOTO First of all a suitable stadium had to be found. Precondition was a free access and a good condition of the markings on the running track. In most stadiums near my hometown this is not the case. Many of them, especially the running tracks, are in bad condition. Often the markings are not bright enough. During my last vacation I was searching for a stadium where I could do my running training. I discovered a stadium where I found best conditions not only for training but accidentally also for taking my planned photos as a base for the image I had in mind. So I took my camera and revisited the stadium the next day. I decided to compose the elements in a way that the four numbers 1 2 3 4 appeared centered (and aligned exactly horizontal) and the lanes vanished in infinity at the upper left area of the image. I took care that the end of the lanes were aligned exactly horizontal, too. So the composition seemed to be stable and balanced. POST-PROCESSING (with GIMP, a free Image Editing Software) Perspective adjustment was not necessary Simple conversion to b&w and contrast enhancement All areas except the lines and the numbers were wiped out with black color The demarcation line between the grass and the track had to be special treated due to the structure on its right side (drainage holes) Particular care was taken to maintain the grainy structure of the synthetic rubber running track on the white lines and the numbers, while the black areas and the white demarcation line show no structure at all The small horizontal lines on the lanes behind the finsh line disturbed the clarity of the appearance, they were removed, too To add a special feature to the image the mark in the foreground was colored red. This area was also treated very carefully by enhancing the color saturation but maintaining the grainy structure Final adjustments were made to create an overall clearly recognizable structure, this was done with the black brush in 400x enlargement
