A Mother: The Bravest Warrior. I captured this photo of a woman labourer in a sugar factory in Maharashtra. Kolhapur is the hub for sugar production in Maharashtra. People from all over the country come to Kolhapur to work in these sugar factories because of their lucrative nature. Hence, they have to stay there for six to eight months at a stretch near the factory in order to make ends meet as all of the people are financially challenged in many ways. The women in these situations are very headstrong. They have to take care of the family, kids and the harvesting and cutting of sugarcane from nearby villages. They leave their dwelling early in the morning and come back only in the evening. They are assigned a large piece of land where they can set up their temporary shelter like tents etc. They work for 6-8 months and then go back to their native place and repeat the same for the next coming years. Capturing this photo pained me quite a lot as the woman in the picture is cooking as well as taking care of her child who is sleeping in the makeshift crib. It was a very upsetting scenario as the future of the child worried me. Questions for the child’s fate troubled me endlessly; Will the child grow up to work for daily wages in sugar factories or will they go to school, get educated and work to earn a position of respect and comfort for themselves and their family? My mind was muddled with questions, and the uncertainty of life struck me in that moment as life’s ultimate challenge presented itself before me: Nobody can know their own fate.
