Thanks so much to Andre Du Plessis and Mandy Schoch for their critique and their help with this photograph. Traditionally in Mibu the "konggap" (spirit-song) was a song and dance done to appease dead ancestors and spirits. In recent years, many in Mibu put aside the worship of their ancestors to worship the creator-God. While many of the traditional forms of this dance remain, much of it has changed, from the words sung, to the symbolism of the decorations worn. They do it now to honor God. The konggap is an all night thing, preparations (i.e. body paint and decorations) start late, around 10pm or so, and the actually singing and dancing starts roughly the middle of the night and goes till just after sunrise. It's loud and rhythmic drumming can be heard and even felt non-stop all that time. This photograph was the result of some experimenting with long exposure time and a single off camera flash. I felt this ended up capturing a sense of spirituality, community, and movement that I've tried and failed to capture in the past. So this one feels like a big accomplishment for me in my own journey as a photographer.
