Paul Cézanne

  • Born: 19. January 1839 in Aix-en-Provence
  • Died: 22. October 1906
The Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne was one of the decisive forerunners of Modern Art in the 20th century. Born on January 19th, 1839 in Aix-en-Provence, he moved to Paris after briefly studying law, but did not pass the entrance examination for the academy of Fine Arts in the capital. During drawing lessons at the Academie Suisse where he further improved his drawing technique, he met Camille Pissarro, who was nine years older. Pissarro introduced him to the circle of Impressionists. Cézanne can be described as a shy loner, who remained financially dependent on his father, a banker, throughout his life. Until his death from pneumonia on October 22nd 1906, in Aix-en-Provence, critics and the art world denied him broad critical acclaim. Cézanne created a completely new order and language of painting, which arguably turned him into the most important forerunner of Expressionism and Cubism.
